Why do they fight in Major League Baseball Mama?

My son is all excited about joining Little League. He's nine and has two years of instructional baseball under his belt and feels ready to wear a real uniform and play ball, he says. So he's got his glove under his mattress, where it's getting broken in these last weeks of winter weather before the season starts. And we were talking about going to get cleats the other day, an exciting prospect in and of itself, I'm told. In the midst of this conversation, my son's face turned serious and upset. I asked what was up and he told me he hopes there will not be any fighting in this league. Fighting, why would you be thinking of that, there was not any fighting in the parks and recreation league last year, was there, I asked?

He said no. But then admitted he was concerned because he saw a spring training game between the Blue Jays and the Cardinals on TV recently while eating out with friends and because of a bad call both benches broke into a brawl. This startled the heck out of my boy and left him confused. Why do they fight in Major League Baseball Mama, he asked? I didn't know what to say. I wanted to rant about how much these players get paid and that they should behave like mature adults, knowing full well children are watching in the stands and on TV. I wanted to rave about how I don't believe anyone cares about keeping sports wholesome for children anymore. How I rarely let him watch sports on TV because of the adult commercials that run during these games. I wanted to scream about how every time we go to Fenway there are drunks swearing all around us. It's all so frustrating! Instead I sat quietly.

Then my son asked if it's only spring training, how could they get so upset about this one call in a game that isn't even during the real baseball season? I didn't really know how to explain how all these adults could lose their cool at once and not a single person keep it together to stop the brawl. Instead I just apologized for them. I told my son I was sorry he had to witness these athletes and their coaches fighting over a game.

What would you have said?
